People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including Chelsea State Bank and Weingartz

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• The board of directors of Chelsea State Bank recently announced the promotion of David Schaible to executive vice president and CFO for the bank. Schaible began his career at Chelsea State Bank in 1985 and worked his way through the ranks to his most recent position of vice president and head of retail branch administration. He will retain his branch administration duties with this promotion. Chelsea State Bank is a financial institution with offices in Chelsea and Dexter.

• In a grand opening event held Saturday, April 16, Michigan-based outdoor power equipment retailer, Weingartz announced the winner of the Cub Cadet lawn tractor valued at more than $1,800. As part of the "Field of Dreams Giveaway," Diana Jorissen of Waterford beat out eight other finalists, drawing the key that unlocked the LTX1042 lawn tractor. The giveaway celebrated the grand opening event that marked the opening of a Weingartz location in Ann Arbor at 5436 Jackson Road, which formerly housed a Harley Davidson dealership.

• Digital marketing agency Ingenex was recently chosen by AnnArbor.com to manage Google AdWords campaigns for select AnnArbor.com advertisers as part of an enhanced Internet advertising option with AnnArbor.com. In related news, law firm Clark Hill has hired Ingenex to implement a nationwide Pay-Per-Click (PPC) marketing strategy. The PPC strategy is intended to create more traffic and qualified leads to the law firm.

• The Charles Reinhart Co., a real estate company headquartered in Ann Arbor, recently added eight new agents. Chris Brown, Dana Vespremi, Michael Ryan and MaryAnn Ryan joined the Ann Arbor South office; Brad Doan joined the Chelsea office; Josh Kercher and Jo Pichan joined the Ann Arbor North office; and Darby Kolano joined the Saline office.

• Gov. Rick Snyder announced May 2 the appointment of Stephanie Comai to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. The commission, which was established by Michigan’s 1963 Constitution, investigates alleged discrimination and works to protect civil rights. Comai, of Ann Arbor, previously served as a member of the Central Michigan University Board of Trustees. She replaces Eliya Boji and will serve a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2014.

Jann Joseph, an administrator at Grand Valley State University, has been appointed dean of the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University. Since 2006, Joseph has served as associate dean for professional development and administration in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley. Shawn Quilter, associate dean for academic accountability and teacher certification at the college, has been serving as interim dean.

• The University of Michigan board of regents recently approved the appointment of Dr. Thomas P. Shanley as associate dean for clinical and translational research at the U-M Medical School and director of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research. The National Institutes of Health also approved Shanley as principal investigator for U-M’s Clinical and Translational Science Award. Shanley replaces Kenneth J. Pienta, M.D., who previously held both positions before he stepped down in April of this year.

• Washtenaw County nonprofit Food Gatherers recently announced the recipients of their 2011 Gathering Awards, and the award winners were recognized at an annual private reception at Food Gatherers warehouse on April 27. Food Gatherers recognized individuals, companies and organizations that have made a significant contribution to hunger relief in Washtenaw County. Recipients of the 2011 Gathering Awards included Zingerman’s Community of Businesses receiving the Gatherer of Distinction Award; Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility’s Horticultural Program receiving the Gatherer of Plenty Award; Saline Picture Frame Co. receiving the One of a Kind Gatherer Award for its Circle of Art fundraiser; Metro Delivery receiving the One of a Kind Gatherer Award; and Bob Sutton of Terumo receiving the Rookie of the Year Award for starting an employee giving program at Terumo.

• United Bancorp, Inc. recently announced that James C. Lawson has been elected chairman and James D. Buhr elected vice chairman of the board of directors. Lawson is the general manager of Avery Oil & Propane Inc. in Tecumseh. Buhr is president of J.D. Buhr & Company LLC in Ann Arbor.

• Nonprofit Grass Lake Sanctuary, located in Manchester, recently became the recipient of the 2011 Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant for the Mid-Michigan region. The nonprofit organization will receive $39,810 to serve 80 women who are survivors of breast cancer. The survivors will participate in a three-day stay on a 145-acre nature preserve and retreat center in Manchester.

• The Four Points by Sheraton Ann Arbor hotel is celebrating its re-opening and renaming as Sheraton Ann Arbor with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon today. The hotel is located at 3200 Boardwalk in Ann Arbor.

• Ann Arbor-based pharmaceutical company Adeona Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced May 3 that after scientific review, the ongoing clinical trial of its Trimesta (oral estriol) drug candidate for multiple sclerosis has received an additional $1,594,553 in grant funding from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

• Domino's Pizza, headquartered in Ann Arbor, recently became the first pizza delivery company to win back-to-back Chain of the Year honors from Pizza Today magazine. In addition to winning the distinction for 2010 and 2011, Domino's also won the designation in 2003.

Tecumseh Products Co., headquartered in Ann Arbor, recently became a recent signatory for “The Natural Voice,” a global call for action supported by industry and research that points to the environmental, economic and social potential of natural refrigerants in heating, cooling and refrigeration. Tecumseh is focused on developing compressors utilizing hydrocarbon refrigerants R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane), which do not deplete the ozone and which produce fewer of the gases contributing to global warming. Hydrocarbon refrigerants are already being utilized successfully in many parts of the world. Later in 2011, the new Tecumseh Technology Center will open in Ann Arbor, promising to provide state-of-the-art product development capabilities, complete hydrocarbon testing capability and enhanced environmental simulation facilities.

University Research Corridor seed funding of more than $750,000 will support two major environmental health studies including researchers from all three member institutions: Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. The competition that resulted in the funding required that proposals reflect the collaboration of two or more URC institutions and that a URC faculty member (or members) serve as principle investigator or co-investigators. The URC received 11 letters of intent from interested researchers and invited five teams to present full proposals. One of the projects, The Michigan Bloodspot Environmental Epidemiology Project, will use the state of Michigan's newborn blood spot repository to link the blood spot database (with the families' permission) to the data collected on families who will enroll in the arm of the National Children's Study now being conducted by another team of URC researchers. The Michigan Bloodspot Environmental Epidemiology Project will receive a total of $450,000 in URC seed funding over three years. The second winning research proposal will study the effects of air pollution on asthma in the Dearborn area Arab American population. The asthma study will receive about $317,000 in URC seed funding over three years.
